Where does one begin when discussing the Franklin Ace? Franklin was one of the earliest and most successful of the clone makers in the very early 80's -until Apple sued them for using exact copies of the Apple II ROMs. The Apple II ROMs were THE main compatibility issue, and most clone producers built the hardware but the owner had to provide their own copies of the Apple II ROMs. Franklin provided those ROM chips with the Ace 100 model, so Apple came down on them like a ton of bricks. Franklin lost the court battle, and was nearly forced out of business by Apple. Franklin went on to produce other, less compatible clones and they are still in buisness today. (12/19/01)
